Full registration for veterinarians

You do not need to apply for a new licence or registration at this point. Your existing AVS restricted veterinary licence to treat animals and birds remains valid until its stated expiry date, and all current licensing conditions continue to apply.

Who is eligible to be a fully registered veterinarian?

You can apply for full registration if you fall into either of these categories:

• Recognised qualifications: You hold a veterinary degree from a university approved by SVC.

• Other accepted qualifications: You do not hold a recognised qualification, but:

  • Your veterinary qualification is recognised to be of an equivalent standard

  • You can demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to practise

  • You may be required to sit and pass an examination to verify your qualification

To be a duly qualified veterinarian, you must also apply for a valid Practising Certificate, which must be renewed every two years.

What conditions might be placed on your registration?

SVC may include some conditions for your registration, such as:

• Practising only under the supervision of an approved veterinarian

• Having your performance reviewed by an approved veterinarian

• Practising only at specific types of establishments

• Limiting practice to certain areas of veterinary medicine
