Registering as a veterinary specialist

The Veterinary Practice Act 2026 (opens in new tab)will be implemented in phases starting with the formation of the Veterinary Council. Existing veterinarians will be transitioned to the new registration framework in 2027. Until the registration framework commences, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of NParks, will continue to license veterinarians and handle complaints.

At this stage, SVC is not accepting applications for specialist registration yet.

Who is eligible to be a veterinary specialist?

To register as a specialist in a particular area of veterinary medicine, you must first hold full registration as a veterinarian. You may then apply if you meet either of the following criteria:

  • Postgraduate qualification: You hold a postgraduate degree or qualification approved by SVC in your chosen area of specialisation, or

  • Demonstrated expertise: You have acquired the necessary specialist knowledge, skills, and experience in that area.

Specialist registration is subject to approval and renewal conditions set by the SVC.
