Transition plan for veterinarians
Information on the transition plans for the registration of veterinarians
The Veterinary Practice Act 2026 (opens in new tab) will be implemented in phases starting with the formation of the Veterinary Council. Existing veterinarians will be transitioned to the new registration framework in 2027. Until the registration framework commences, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) (opens in new tab), a cluster of NParks, will continue to license veterinarians and handle complaints.
If you hold an existing AVS veterinary licence to treat animals and birds, it remains valid until its stated expiry date, and all current licensing conditions continue to apply. If your licence is due to expire, please renew it through GoBusiness (opens in new tab). Licensed veterinarians must continue to comply with the Code of Ethics (opens in new tab) until further notice.
We will provide more information on what existing AVS-licensed veterinarians need to do before the new registration framework begins.
